La Scena Musicale's July-August Issue - Call for advertising

[Version française]
Download our Festival Guides

Summer has finally arrived and La Scena Musicale continues to provide you with what’s hot on the music scene. Appearing July 2, our July-August issue looks at virtuoso violinist Jonathan Crow, including his involvement with the formation of the New Orford String Quartet. Crow is also our featured July Discovery CD artist presented by LSM with XXI Records (available only to paying subscribers). As we celebrate competitions, you’ll get in-depth profiles on winners of the Montreal International Music Competition, the Prix d’Europe, and other competitions as well as a look at the coming Canadian Music Competition in an interview with conductor Jean-François Rivest. In addition, Maestro Kent Nagano discusses his Brahms-filled summer. We also look at the Canadian premiere of the Messa per Rossini at Lanaudière; this grandiose work is a collection of requiems written in collaboration between 13 of Rossini’s most prominent contemporary Italian composers. All of this and more, including calendars, reviews and summer reading.

The July-August issue of La Scena Musicale is distributed on July 2 and the deadline for advertising is June 26, 2009.

Looking towards the fall, we are pleased to announce the first-ever annual La SCENA Arts Directory, which will hit stands August 12, 2009. The directory will be the first of its kind in Quebec and promises to be a premier source for professional artists, students, and arts-lovers in the province. Through the directory, readers will have access to comprehensive listings of schools, conservatories, teachers, programs, competitions, websites, performance spaces, amateur and professional choirs and ensembles, supply stores, high end audio, agents and much more in the fields of music, dance, theatre, film, and visual arts. There will be regional listings as well as a national section, plus a fee based international section. The appearance of the bilingual directory is timed for back to school, and will be the essential guide for arts and music learning and participation.

The fall arts and music scene will be extensively covered in the Fall Edition of La SCENA, which will appear on September 3, 2009. We are thrilled to grace its cover with Canadian auteur Robert Lepage, the internationally-acclaimed playwright, filmmaker, and multimedia artist. Included in the Fall issue will be the September issue of La Scena Musicale, featuring tenor Marc Hervieux. This issue is shaping to be a special issue on Opera.

LSM is already planning two fall opera weekends: Opera Weekend in Toronto features the Canadian Opera Company’s productions of Stravinsky’s The Nightingale and Other Short Fables and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and Opera Weekend in Montreal presents Opéra de Montréal in performances of Pagliacci’s Leoncavallo and Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi. Call 514-948-2520 or e-mail us at operaweekend@scena.org for tickets.

Petition: Restore Canada Council Funding to Controlled-Circulation Magazines

The Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) has recently dropped support for controlled-circulation print magazines in its 2010 application process, rendering La Scena Musicale (LSM), The Music Scene Ontario and La SCENA ineligible to compete for CCA grants. In 2007-08, the Canada Council funded 106 arts & literary magazines for a total of $2,661,900.

We feel that all arts and literary magazines should be treated equally and fairly, and this means the ability to submit an application that is reviewed by a peer jury.

Consequently, La Scena Musicale has launched a campaign to reverse the Canada Council policy change. Please show your support for all controlled-circulation arts magazines (including our family of magazine) by signing up and circulate this appeal.
