Portland Symphony Orchestra’s February concerts filled with romance

PORTLAND, Maine – The Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) has two great options to celebrate with a Valentine with the Tuesday Classical concert “Rach and Romance” on February 16, and through the weekend with the PSO Pops! “Isn’t it Romantic” on February 20 and 21.

“Rach and Romance!” opens with John Adams’ The Chairman Dances, an outtake from his opera Nixon in China. Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, “Romantic,” originally commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1930, and familiar to many from its use in the film Alien, follows. For a spectacular finale, guest pianist Yuja Wang, recently nominated for a Grammy Award, will join the PSO in Rachmaninoff’s enormously popular Piano Concerto No. 2.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. preceded by a Concert Conversation at 6:15 p.m., and followed by a PostConcert Q&A with the artists and the Afterglow reception at Restaurant Grace. For additional insight on the evening’s program, visit portlandsymphony.com for program notes, artist biographies, and Robert Moody’s Online Insights. The live recording of this concert will be broadcast on MBPN on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

On February 20 and 21, PSO Pops! present “Isn’t It Romantic?” with Jenn Raithel Newman (featured soloist in the PSO’s 2008 Independence Pops concerts) and tenor Joe Cassidy (most recently seen in the immensely popular PSO Magic of Christmas concerts) under the baton of guest conductor Matthew Troy. The concert features love songs and romantic duets from Broadway shows throughout the ages, including favorites “People Will Say We’re In Love” from Oklahoma, “Can’t Help Lovin’ dat Man” from Showboat, “JoAnna” from Sweeney Todd and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Memory” from Cats. Music from West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, Guys and Dolls and more will round out this delightful program.

Sponsored by AIDENT, performances take place Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are available through PortTix at (207) 842-0800 or at www.porttix.com. Tickets are also available in person at the Merrill Auditorium box office at 20 Myrtle Street in Portland, Monday through Saturday, from noon to 6 p.m. Special pricing for students, seniors and groups may be available.
