The 2010 Markham Jazz Festival announces the MJF Opening Night GALA – featuring an evening of Jazz giants

The 2010 Markham Jazz Festival announces the MJF Opening Night GALA – featuring an evening of Jazz giants.

Markham, ON - Annual Markham Jazz Festival kicks off with an evening featuring some of jazz’s best loved names. A once-in-a-lifetime double bill, thanks to a very generous grant from Ontario Tourism’s “Celebrate Ontario” program, jazz lovers will be treated to the incredible guitar stylings and vocals of headliner John Pizzarelli, and Cameron Brown’s “Hear and Now” featuring Don Byron, Tony Jefferson, and jazz legend, songstress Sheila Jordan!

The fundraising Gala celebrates the opening of the Markham Jazz Festival, a festival known for its dynamic line-up of great Canadian and International jazz talent. The GALA is sure to have something for everyone!

The GALA will feature a fantastic evening of music that will touch on all the elements that make jazz an amazing art form. Held at the beautiful Markham Theatre, the evening will include a catered intermission reception and silent auction (proceeds shared with the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation). This gala concert is an evening that no music lover will want to miss.

John Pizzarelli is a world-renowned jazz guitarist and singer who will keep you mesmerized with his interpretation of the best jazz standards in history. A rare and funny entertainer who naturally engages his audience, John also broadcasts his own syndicated jazz show, “Radio Deluxe” show from New York which plays every Sunday morning on Jazz FM 91.1.

Bassist and composer Cameron Brown leads his acclaimed “Hear and Now” quartet, featuring Sheila Jordan, a jazz legend in her own right. She projects the warmth of a great musician celebrating the enduring spirit of music. Performing an eclectic mix of music that includes bebop and jazz standards, the quartet includes percussionist Tony Jefferson and Don Byron, considered by many to be the world’s most innovative jazz clarinettist and our festival resident artist in 2010.

The Markham Jazz Festival runs from August 20-22, 2010 and is one of the town’s most notable events, attracting thousands from across Ontario to the quaint main streets of Markham and Unionville. With over 20 performances on four stages, plus many “hot spots” (local bars and restaurants who book their own acts under the umbrella of the Markham Jazz Festival), this year’s festival is sure to provide “cool” sounds for all fans of great music!
