For Immediate Release – Toronto, ON, June 1, 2010: Queen of Puddings Music Theatre is proud to announce the upcoming world premiere of Beauty Dissolves in a Brief Hour. The awaited new production comprises three distinct chamber operas sung in three languages (Mandarin, English and medieval French) commissioned from three Canadian composers: Fuhong Shi, John Rea and Pierre Klanac. Scored for soprano, mezzo-soprano and accordion, the texts of the three works have a thematic through line based on the eternal theme of love, and are presented in one unified fully staged music-theatre/opera work.

This collection of three extraordinary expostulations of love comes from three different cultures and periods. From the Tang Dynasty, Spring, River, and Flowers on a Moonlit Night, a poem centering on the symbolism and constancy of the moon as a foil for the inconstancy of love. From the Italian baroque, the English translation of the texts Beauty Dissolves in a Brief Hour, are construed from a woman’s point of view, observing the suffering caused by unrequited love, presented across a full range of emotions, from ironic mockery to weeping melancholy. The final poems are by the Medieval French poet, Christine de Pisan, unique in being virtually the first woman of her time to be a recognized writer. Her poems Jeux à Vendre (Songs for Sale) are a collection of clever word games played between lovers in a form of courtship. The text images and emotions from all three operas form connective threads to create the overall sensibility of the production.

The vulnerable texture of soprano, mezzo-soprano and accordion creates a very delicate and highly refined sound world, resulting in an intimately sensual, fragile and intense experience. Singers Xin Wang and Krisztina Szabo share the stage with accordion player John Lettieri. Stage director Ruth Madoc-Jones, set & costume designer Michael Gianfrancesco and lighting designer Kimberly Purtell team up with Queen of Puddings' co-artistic directors, Dáirine Ní Mheadhra and John Hess for the creation of Beauty Dissolves in a Brief Hour.
