Includes inventive hymns with words by Margaret Atwood

ECHO WOMEN’S CHOIR’S “GARDENS OF SONG” YIELD

A SPLENDID VARIETY OF MUSIC, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12

Echo Women’s Coir offers a bounty of splendid music in its concert, Gardens of Song, Sunday, December 12, 7 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 10 Trinity Square (behind the Eaton Centre/wheelchair accessible). Becca Whitla and Alan Gasser conduct, with Deanna Yerichuk as guest conductor. Whitla is also featured on piano.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door and $8 for un(der)waged. For information, call (416) 588-9050, ext. 3, visitwww.echowomenschoir.ca or e-mail info.echo@gmail.com.

The vibrant 80-member choir will perform earth-inspired settings by U.S. singer-songwriter composer Orville Stoeber to a pair of Margaret Atwood hymns from The Year of the Flood. Echo drew cheers when the choir sang them at the opening of the Planet in Focus festival. Choir member Jennifer Foster will accompany on guitar. The choir also performs a further collection of Atwood hymns, set to traditional tunes.

Messages of freedom are conveyed in two South African songs in their original languages, and You Will be Free, a composition by Alan Gasser set the words of Desmond Tutu from a 1990 speech on the Osnaburgh Reserve in northwestern Ontario, during the Oka crisis.

The heartache of unhappy love is captured in Three Appalachian Love Songs, as sung by Jean Ritchie, and arranged by Becca Whitla.

Indie singer-songwriter Jennifer Foster – known as Jennifer LFO – has provided Echo with an original song on the Gardens theme. She also arranged Women of the World (by Linda Hirst and Jim O’Rourke) into a cheerful anthem that Echo sings with gusto!

Foster’s Juno CD, Songs From the Alien Beacon, which she co-produced, received a Juno nomination for producer of the year (producer Michael Phllip Wojewoda).

ECHO acknowledges the support of the Toronto Arts Council.
