Yannick Nézet-Séguin extends contract with Rotterdam Philharmonic to 2015

Music Director will stay with the orchestra until at least 2015

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin will continue their collaboration until at least 2015. Today, managing director Hans Waege and Yannick Nézet-Seguin are signing a contract for a second three-year term. Nézet-Séguin made his debut with the Rotterdam Philharmonic in 2005, and became the orchestra’s Music Director in 2008, taking over from Valery Gergiev. Since taking up the position, he has conducted many highly acclaimed concert projects, CD recordings and his first outstanding tours to the Far East and to North America. Future plans of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Yannick Nézet-Séguin include their first appearance together at the BBC Proms this August and three performances at the Théatre des Champs-Élysées as part of their recently-announced Paris residency.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin took over from Valery Gergiev in 2008. The press then spoke of a “golden opportunity”: from the beginning, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and its new Music Director matched each other in musical colour, vitality and energy. Nézet-Séguin: “For me, it was love at first sight with the Rotterdam Philharmonic. It is an orchestra with a strong character in a city full of vitality. I felt at home immediately. It means a lot to me that we can deepen our relationship.”  


The orchestra shares that feeling fully, says Managing Director Hans Waege. “Yannick is an extraordinary talent, who has captured the audience's imagination. We have already experienced many unforgettable moments and are looking forward to building on what has been achieved already. We have many plans together: major projects to tour Germany, Central Europe, the UK and Asia, our residence stay in Paris, recording projects and new artistic projects. International character and local anchoring go hand in hand. The best years are yet to come.”

After two years in Rotterdam Nézet-Séguin's record is already very impressive. His performances of Bach and Beethoven were as enthusiastically received as his interpretations of Mahler and Messiaen. The Orchestra’s community arts projects involve young musical talents drawn from all over Rotterdam’s varied population and Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s work for this programme has proved a huge source of inspiration. 

Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra enjoy an excellent international reputation and the partnership features regularly in many leading musical centres. Their commercial recordings include Beethoven and Korngold violin concertos with Renaud Capucon; ‘Fantasy – a night at the opera’ with flautist Emmanuel Pahud; and Ravel orchestral works, all released within the last few months by EMI Classics/Virgin to outstanding reviews. Their concerts in New York were marked by “youthful intensity”, according to The New York Times
. Nézet-Séguin combines his position as Music Director in Rotterdam with the roles of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor at the Orchestre Métropolitain in Montreal and Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Future plans

The Rotterdam Philharmonic and Yannick Nézet-Séguin have several notable productions in the near future, including Turandot for Netherlands Opera next month and the diptych La voix humaine - L'enfant prodigue as part of the Rotterdam Opera Days in June. During the 2010/2011 season Nézet-Séguin will conduct repertoire ranging from the St. Matthew Passion to Mahler symphonies, and will conclude the 2010 Gergiev Festival with Mahler's Second Symphony. This year also includes three performances at the Théatre des Champs-Élysées as part of their recently-announced Paris residency; and their first appearance together at the BBC Proms in August. Also due for release in the coming months is the first of a series of recordings on the BIS label. This is a coupling of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and La Mort de Cléopâtre, featuring Anna Caterina Antonacci as soloist.

Semperoper Dresden Offers Scintillating 2010-11 Season

The Designated General Director of the Semperoper, Dr. Ulrike Hessler introduced her concept for the new season 2010/11.

The 2010/2011 season will usher in a new chapter in the glittering biography of the Semperoper Dresden when, for the first time in the famous opera house’s more than 350 year history, a woman will hold the office of general manager. In her new position, Dr. Ulrike Hessler intends to foster a lively and fruitful mix of tradition and innovation. The Saxon State Opera will promote and nurture its ensemble of singers, whilst also focussing on younger audiences and the musical roots of the city of Dresden. »Not a radical break with the past« says Ulrike Hessler, »but continuous development and transformation as the path into the future «.

The first premiere already has close links to Dresden. »Daphne« is one of Richard Strauss’s nine operas which were originally produced in the Saxon capital. Further operas by Strauss, as well as works by other composers with strong connections to the city, such as Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner, will follow in the next five years. »Rusalka« by Antonín Dvořák bridges the gap to the neighbouring city of Prague, highlighting the shared cultural heritage. This production also offers Dresden audiences their first taste of the work of director Stefan Herheim. As the Semperoper’s principal director, he will bring one of his sensuous and wonderfully imaginative productions to the city each season.

Of course, in a baroque city one should expect to hear baroque opera. In the first season audiences can enjoy Claudio Monteverdi’s »L'incoronazione die Poppea«, Henry Purcell’s »Dido and Aeneas« and Johann Adolph Hasse’s Intermezzo »Il tutore«.

Kurt Weill is also connected to Dresden through a premiere conducted by Fritz Busch. However, the work which audiences can look forward to is the opera »Street Scene«, originally composed by Weill for Broadway, and now to enjoy its premiere performance in Dresden. With a large cast of characters, the Semperoper’s expanded ensemble will have a great opportunity to show off their talents.

With its new youth programme Semperoper Junge Szene, the opera house intends to cultivate a young audience while at the same time bringing different generations together. Hans Werner Henze has specially composed a new opera for this venture entitled »Gisela! Oder: Die denk- und merkwürdigem Wege des Glücks«. This work, which can be enjoyed by all ages, will receive its premiere on the main opera stage. Further Junge Szene projects will be presented on the smaller rehearsal stage 1 (directly attached to the opera house). According to Ulrike Hessler: »Young people are very important to us, not just as the audience of tomorrow, but also as a source of artistic creativity. They can support us in keeping alive our wonderful art form, infusing it with new life and energy«.

The Semperoper is perhaps unusual in devoting much time and effort to cultivating its repertoire and ensemble of singers. General Manager Ulrike Hessler and the new opera director, Eytan Pessen, have made a conscious decision to enlarge the current ensemble with an infusion of strong young voices, offering them space to grow artistically by performing diverse roles in a variety of styles. Pessen emphasis that »I am fascinated when artists work together to create a complete and unified work of art, where a symbiosis can develop between individual singers and the entire ensemble«.

Finally, Semperoper Ballett under Aaron S. Watkin will also display this spirit of close cooperation and mutual understanding when they present, amongst other works, »Coppelia« and choreographies by Forsythe, while also collaborating with the Palucca School and the European Centre of the Arts in Hellerau.

At the season 2010/11 the Semperoper shows 14 new productions, with 3 Ballet productions, and 3 concertant opera premieres.

»Junge Choreografen« (Young Choreographers)

On the one hand we have dancers on stage, embodying the roles of diverse choreographies in a huge range of styles; on the other hand we have choreographers, creators, continually striving for innovation and seeking out new ideas. They offer fresh challenges to both dancers and audience while expanding the boundaries of their art.

Dancer or choreographer? If this barrier exists, how should it be overcome? »Young Choreographers« shows that the transition from one to the other can be smoothly overcome. The new season sees the start of an annual project offering dancers from the Semperoper Ballett a chance to try their hand at choreography. They will devise pieces exclusively for other dancers at the Semperoper, which will then be presented in public in the framework of the »Young Choreographers« project. This offers active dancers the opportunity to extend their field of activities to include the creation of new work. Audience will be able to follow closely the development of »their« dancers and perhaps enjoy the first endeavours of a future star choreographer.

»Ballett on the move«

The 2010/11 season sees the Semperoper Ballett make use of various venues throughout Dresden as additional platforms for the exploration of contemporary experimental dance. In particular, the company dancers will be offered the possibility of furthering their individual artistic development by combining dance with other elements of the performing arts. Currently planned are collaborations with the Palais Summer, Festspielhaus Hellerau, the Sculpture Collection of Dresden’s State Art Collections, as well as Volkswagen´s »Die Gläserne Manufaktur« (The Transparent Factory).

The Music Scene Printemps 2010



La Scena Musicale tourne les projecteurs vers le jazz ce mois-ci. Les saxophonistes André Leroux et Richard Underhill feront la une de nos numéros de mai 2010 (Leroux dans LSM et Underhill dans TMS); à l’intérieur, les lecteurs trouveront un guide indispensable des festivals de jazz en plus de notre guide canadien des festivals de musique du monde et folklorique. Plus de 130 festivals seront répertoriés dans notre numéro national, dont le tirage sera doublé à 50 000 exemplaires. Nous nous arrêterons également à deux productions : Les Aventures de Madame Merveille de l’Ensemble contemporain de Montréal etCendrillon de Massenet à l’Opéra de Montréal. Nous aurons enfin des entrevues avec la violoniste Rachel Barton Pine, le pianiste et compositeur Stephan Moccio et la pianiste Janina Fialkovska.

Lancement du Fonds de dotation LSM

Notre demande au programme de subventions de contrepartie, Placement Culture, a été officiellement approuvée. Par conséquent, le gouvernement du Québec versera 1,50 $ pour chaque dollar de don reçu par LSM. Le programme Placement Culture exige que La Scène Musicale crée un fonds de dotation. Notre objectif est de recueillir 100 000 $ au cours des douze prochains mois. Si l’on y ajoute la subvention de contrepartie du gouvernement, le montant du fonds s’élèverait à 250 000 $. L’atteinte de cet objectif est d’une extrême importance pour maintenir l'excellence et assurer la survie de nos périodiques, et c’est pourquoi nous annonçons maintenant le lancement de notre campagne 2010 de contributions au fonds de dotation. The Music Scene Winter 2010




La Scena Musicale shines the spotlight on jazz this month. NEW Endowment Fund: 
Our application for the matching program, Placement Culture, has formally been accepted: for every dollar donated to LSM/TMS, the Québec government will contribute one dollar and fifty cents. Placement Culture is designed to create endowment funds for charitable arts groups like La Scene Musicale/The Music Scene. Our goal is to raise $100,000 until November 30, 2010, which combined with the government contribution, will create a $250,000 endowment. This will help us continue our magazines's excellence and innovation for years to come. We are therefore launching at this time our 2010 endowment fund campaign.
