TORONTO, May 17, 2011 -- Stephanie Martin, Artistic Director at the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, is presenting a new series of concerts which will provide an opportunity to experience the beauty of sacred music in this beautiful historic church. Each concert will feature a choir singing an a cappella renaissance mass, a baroque chamber ensemble and organ music. The featured choirs will be the Gallery Choir of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene, Ensemble Theotokos and the Pax Christi Chamber Choir. The atmosphere is casual with a “come as you are; pay what you can” policy.

Ms. Martin explains that the tradition in this sacred space has continued for almost a century. “The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene became internationally famous when Healey Willan, Canada’s first internationally known classical composer, embraced the church, its liturgy and its choir in 1921. We are trying to keep his dream alive by continuing the tradition of singing and playing wonderful music.”

The choirs involved will focus on the renaissance mass. Masterworks by the Spanish renaissance composers Victoria and Guerrero are featured, as well as the master of renaissance polyphony, Giovanni da Palestrina. This a cappella repertoire will be balanced by baroque chamber music with strings and continuo, led by the charismatic young baroque violinist, Joshua Colucci. Listeners can also thrill to the power and glory of St. Mary Magdalene’s three-manual pipe organ.
