2011 Victoria Symphony Splash Features 11 Year Old Violinist

Victoria, BC – At a launch event held this morning the details of the 22nd annual Victoria Symphony Splash, which will take place on July 31, 2011, were announced. Eleven year old violinist Alice Haekyo Lee was chosen as the 2011 Splash Young Soloist and 18 year old Jared Richardson was announced as the very first Splash Young Composer.

The event was held at Island Savings Credit Union. Randy Bertsch, Vice President, member Sales and Service announced that Island Savings was the new sponsor of the Splash Family Zone and was excited to assist in growing this aspect of Splash. This year the Family Zone will be held on the lawn of the Fairmont Empress from 1 to 4pm. It will include musical performances, activities and crafts and a bouncy castle. He also announced two other new sponsors, Provincial Capital Commission and BC Parks, who in partnership are this year’s Theme Sponsor – Celebrating BC Parks 100.

Victoria Symphony Executive Director Mitchell Krieger also announced that the Victoria Symphony Splash Band of Heroes recognition program had raised $33,000 to date with a goal of $50,000 by July 31st. Introduced in 2010, the Band of Heroes Program was an innovative alternative to traditional sponsorship and gave small and medium sized businesses and individuals the opportunity to support Splash in a way previously not available. In 2010 over 50 businesses and individuals came forward and joined the Band of Heroes.

Victoria Symphony Splash is the grand finale of two weeks of outdoor concerts taking place from July 19th to 31st. Symphony in the Summer, as it is known, will include four performances with the Victoria Symphony’s entire orchestra and an additional eight performances by small ensembles of orchestra members. These concerts take place at Butchart Gardens, Beacon Hill Park, several of the city’s squares, the Legislative Steps, the Lawn of the Fairmont Empress and the Inner Harbour.

Victoria Symphony Music Director Tania Miller announced the concert highlights for Victoria Symphony Splash 2011 including several pieces that were in celebration of BC Parks 100. “This year marks my 8th Splash. While I am proud of this anniversary, it is nothing compared to the anniversary we celebrate this year – BC Parks 100. I thank them for the contribution they have made to our province and for the musical inspiration for this year’s Splash,” stated Miller.

Musical highlights performed by the Victoria Symphony will include Roses from the South by Strauss, Everything’s Coming Up Roses by Jules Styne, and By the Sleepy Lagoon by Coates. Popular hits include a tribute to the Beatles and Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns.

Miller also announced that for the first time a young composer would be featured at Splash. Eighteen year old Jared Richardson is a local composer who has already earned many awards for his work. The Victoria Symphony will perform Winds of Kananaskis, a piece written by Jared when he was only 15. For the past three years Jared participated in the Victoria Symphony’s vsNEW program for young composers, which pairs composers from 9 to 18 years of age with a small group of symphony musicians and the composer in residence.

Musical guests include Music Corner Ensemble and Beacon Hill Brass who will be performing in the Splash Family Zone from 1pm to 4pm followed by The Timebenders who will lead a street dance on Belleville Street in front of the Legislative Building beginning at 4pm.

The final announcement of the event was made by Maestra Miller. She proudly introduced 11 year violinist Alice Haeyko Lee as the 2011 Victoria Symphony Splash Young Soloist. A student of Michael van der Sloot, Lee will perform the first movement from Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Maestra Miller stated that it was Alice’s ability to put so much emotion into the music that made her stand-out choice among the 14 other musicians who auditioned to be the 2011 Splash Soloist.

Victoria Symphony Splash takes place on July 31, 2011. From a floating stage in Victoria’s picturesque Inner Harbour, Maestra Tania Miller, the Victoria Symphony, The Timebenders, the Canadian Scottish Regiment Pipe and Drum Band, Music Corner Ensemble, Beacon Hill Brass and the 2011 Splash Young Soloist Alice Haeyko Lee will perform to an enthusiastic crowd of 40,000 people. The day begins at 1pm with activities and live music for families in the Splash Family Zone and ends with Victoria Symphony’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture at 10pm accompanied by fireworks and cannons.
