Community event on Public Square to include procession, tribute events, readings, and performances followed by Cleveland Orchestra concert conducted by Loras John Schissel

CLEVELAND – In anticipation of The Cleveland Orchestra 9/11 Commemoration Concert on Public Square on Sunday, September 11, 2011, the Orchestra invites the public to submit original Images of Peace – photos or artwork – to The Cleveland Orchestra to be displayed on a giant screen just prior to the concert on Public Square on September 11, 2011. The 9/11 Commemoration Concert is presented in partnership with Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

In addition to the public display on September 11, the Images of Peace will be posted on the Cleveland Orchestra Blog to create an archive of our community’s Images of Peace. The public is invited to submit photos and artwork of people, places, imagery, or anything that communicates a personal message of peace.

Simply email (must be 1MB to 3MB in size in order to be displayed) your original Images of Peace, your name, and the city where you live, by August 30, 2011 to peace@clevelandorchestra.com or mail photos or drawings to:

Pre-Concert Tribute Programs Begin at 2:30 p.m.

The Orchestra also announces additional details of pre-concert tribute programs, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. on September 11, 2011:

The Cleveland Orchestra will perform its 9/11 Commemoration Concert on Sunday, September 11, 2011, at 5:00 p.m., in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Pre-concert tribute programs begin at 2:30 p.m. The remembrance event, conducted by Loras John Schissel, will be held on Public Square in downtown Cleveland.

The concert, which will take the place of the Orchestra’s annual Star-Spangled Spectacular on Public Square, will provide an opportunity for the community to gather together to honor the heroic first responders and pay a memorial tribute to those who lost their lives that day.

This free event is generously funded by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. Additional support is provided by Cleveland City Council, Tower City Center, Greater Cleveland RTA, WKYC-TV, WCLV 104.9 FM, and media sponsor WVIZ-PBS/WCPN-90.3 FM ideastream.

On September 30, 2001, approximately 1,500 Northeast Ohioans gathered at Severance Hall to hear The Cleveland Orchestra perform A Concert in Tribute and Remembrance, conducted by Jahja Ling and Franz Welser-Möst, who began his tenure as Music Director in September 2002. The musicians of the Orchestra organized the free concert as a memorial to the victims of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and in tribute to all those involved in the heroic rescue and relief efforts.

Getting There

Getting to Public Square is easy! The Cleveland Orchestra encourages concertgoers to take Greater Cleveland RTA rapid transit to Terminal Tower, the Healthline along Euclid Avenue, or use convenient parking lots in the downtown area.

The event is presented in partnership with Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.
