Mooredale Concerts Presents 2011-12 Season




Cellist Ofra Harnoy gives her first Canadian recital after a decade-long sabbatical from her meteoric career as one of the world’s foremost cellists, with Anton Kuerti at the piano. Roman Simovic, a leading violinist of his generation, plays Brahms in his Toronto debut, with the dynamic Ontario Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Marco Parisotto. And violin virtuoso Dmitri Berlinsky leads and solos with his own spectacular chamber orchestra. Famed Canadian pianist Stéphane Lemelin presents a joint recital with celebrated Canadian soprano Donna Brown.

And there’s still more high-calibre music-making in Mooredale Concerts’ 2011-12 season. Under Artistic Director Anton Kuerti, the 23rdseason of Mooredale Concerts – Toronto’s best bargain for great music – features six astounding concerts at an astonishing low price.

Most performances take place Sundays, 3:15 p.m. at Walter Hall, with two exceptions. (Please see the list below.)

MUSIC & TRUFFLES: Five of the featured concerts will also be presented as a one-hour, interactive performance for children 5-15 at Music & Truffles. Adults wishing to learn more about music and music-making are also welcome. All take place at Walter Hall, Sundays, 1:15 p.m. Subscriptions are $50, and include a chocolate truffle at the conclusion.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 – Ofra Harnoy, cello, one of Canada's most beloved musical superstars, plays in Canada for the first time after a decade-long sabbatical, with Anton Kuerti at the piano.

Sunday, January 15, 2012Acclaimed U.S.-based Russian violinist Dmitri Berlinsky performs Mendelssohn’s D minor concerto with the International Chamber Soloists, an ensemble he founded and directs. The ICS, which initially consisted of students from around the world but now includes professional artists, is releasing a new CD of Piazzolla’s Four Seasons in the fall of 2011. “Glorious sound…talented ensemble… an inspired concert.” – Kalamazoo Gazette. “Berlinsky displayed complete technical mastery…elegance of style and phrasing.” – The Strad

*** Tuesday*** February 28, 2012, 8 p.m. at Koerner Hall – Violinist Roman Simovic, concertmaster of the London (UK) Symphony, joins Maestro Marco Parisotto and the Ontario Philharmonic for the Brahms Violin Concerto. “A rare, grand talent with unlimited abilities’’ – violinist Shlomo Mintz.

(No Music & Truffles will be offered February 28. Instead, pianist Anton Kuerti will present a special children’s event on Sunday, February 12.)

Sunday, April 1, 2012 – Pianist Stéphane Lemelin with soprano Donna Brown, in a program that includes the Debussy Preludes Book 1, Fauré Nocturnes, and songs by Schubert, Mahler and Wolf .

Sunday, April 15 – The Afiara String Quartet, a Mooredale favorite, returns to play Schubert’s glorious Two Cello Quintet with cellist David Hetherington.
