Musica Sacra a Roma – official opening by Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in the Basilica di San Crisogono

The Italian city of Rome will open its doors to participants in the 4th Musica Sacra a Roma. From July 2 to 6, 2011 amateur choirs from 12 countries will be meeting at this international choir competition and festival of the INTERKULTUR event series. They will be performing outstanding sacred music in a peaceful competition at historic sites in Rome.

The Opening Mass on Saturday (July 2, 5 p.m.) will be held by Mons. Valentino Miserachs Grau and is one of the highlights of the event. Mons. Grau is the director of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome and is one of this year’s jury members in Rome. The opening program will be enriched by the well-known Korean Choir, Ansan City Choir under the direction of Dr. Shin-Hwa Park. The 40-strong choir has a diversified repertoire from Renaissance to contemporary music.

Popular highlights of the festival and competition will be concerts every night and the Grand Prize Competition on July 5 in the Basilica di San Crisogono. Other venues are beautiful churches in Rome, as the church of Madonna Dell'Orto or Chiesa San Francesco a Ripa. The festival underwrites making music together and celebrating at international Friendship Concerts in a sacred ambiance.

A total of 18 choirs from Croatia, Nigeria, Norway, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Hungary and the Czech Republic are expected to come to Italy. The South African Choirs Hoerskool Jeugland Boys Choir and Girls Choir Hoerskool Jeugland, conducted by Richter Grimbeek, from Kempton Park in the province Gauteng will have the longest journey of all.

The international jury is coming from three different countries: Kim M. Durr (USA), Msgr. Valentino Miserachs Grau (Italy) and Vytautas Miskinis (Lithuania). The 4th Musica Sacra a Roma will take place from July 2 – 6, 2011.
