THE STUDIO DE MUSIQUE ANCIENNE DE MONTRÉAL’S 2011-2012 SEASON

Montreal, Monday, June 13, 2011 – The Studio de Musique ancienne de Montréal (SMAM) announces the details of its 38th season, made up of 5 concerts presented in 4 different venues. Christopher Jackson, Artistic Director of the SMAM, will conduct four of the five musical programs. An especially rich season with plenty to discover and explore, including excerpts of Orlando di Lasso’s Penitential Psalms and Claudio Monteverdi’s Selva Morale e spirituale, as well as other works for chorus and brass by Giovanni Gabrieli. Among the guest artists appearing are soprano Suzie LeBlanc, on Sunday, June 4, 2012 at 3 pm at Saint-Léon de Westmount Church; and conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni, who will lead the SMAM choir and I Musici de Montréal Chamber Orchestra in Handel’s famous Messiah in the new concert hall at Place des Arts on Good Friday, April 6, 2012 at 7:30 pm.

The opening concert of the season will take place at the Darling Foundry on Thursday, September 15 at 8 pm. On the program, 16th- and 17th-century vocal music selected from the repertory of St. Peter’s Choir in Rome: Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni, Orlando di Lasso, Vincenzo Ugolini, Giovanni de Macque, Orazio Benevoli, and Francesco Soriano. The SMAM also recorded this program for the Atma classique label in January 2009. The record launch will take place just before the concert.
