The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performs during the World Harp Congress, the world’s largest Harp Festival

Vancouver, BC - This month, the world’s largest harp festival comes to Vancouver! The World Harp Congress & Festival, usually held in Europe, is being held in Canada for the first time, July 24th to 30th.

During this week-long event, more than one hundred of the world’s top harpists will perform. And some eight hundred participants are expected to attend from forty different countries. It is being hailed as a gathering of the world's greatest harpists.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime music experience in Vancouver. The world’s leading harpists descend on Vancouver from around the world: leading Irish harpists, Scottish harpists, classical harpists, Baroque harpists, jazz harpists, South American harpists, Chinese harpists…and the list goes on and on. There are numerous concerts and styles of music being presented.

The World Harp Congress & Festival is centered in downtown Vancouver. Concerts, workshops and master classes run daily for Congress registrants. Each evening there are classical and jazz concerts open to the public at the Orpheum Theatre, Vogue Theatre or St. Andrew’s Wesley Church. The concerts feature the world’s top classical harpists as well as top jazz and world harpists.

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performs in three concerts during the Congress and Festival. On Tuesday, July 26th at the Orpheum, Evan Mitchell conducts “World of Harp Concertos, Blues and Techno Harp!” featuring music and musicians from Germany, Turkey, Mexico, the Czech Republic, and the United States.

On Friday, July 29th at the Orpheum, Evan Mitchell conducts “Gala Harp Concertos and Spindrift” featuring artists and repertoire with an international flavour and a local connection: Michael Conway-Baker’s Harp Concerto.

The orchestra also performs on Saturday, July 30th with conductor Ken Hsieh at St. Andrew’s Wesley Church. Hosted by Bill Richardson, this intimate concert features harpists from Vancouver, Japan, Norway, and Serbia. Afterwards, stroll down to English Bay to catch the fireworks!
