Toronto, ON - Off Centre Music Salon launches its 17th season on Sunday, October 30, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at Glenn Gould Studio, presenting Russia in Two Acts: i. Shostakovich – the non-conforming conformist? ii. Who was Onegin?, hosted by Stuart Hamiltonand acclaimed Toronto novelist Sheila Heti.

In Act I, audiences will enjoy a performance of Shostakovich’s only Cello Sonata, composed in 1934, only two years before Soviet censors publicly denounced him as an enemy of the state. This is followed by the composer’s song-cycle of five dangerously satirical poems by Sasha Cherny. In 1959, the original performance of this song-cycle was nearly shut down. In Act II Off Centre examines Tchaikovsky’s 1879 operaEugene Onegin, questioning him as a careless, selfish, cynic sacrificing the promise of young love and loyal friendship, or a man unable to recognize happiness because it was just too close.

Performing in this two-act journey to Russia are: soprano Lindsay Barrett, mezzo-soprano Erica Iris Huang, tenor Ryan Harper, baritone Geoffrey Sirett, cellist Winona Zelenka, and pianists Ricker Choi, Inna Perkis and Boris Zarankin.

Tickets for Russia in Two Acts are now on sale and can be purchased in advance by calling 416-466-1870 or by Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the day of the concert.
