Tafelmusik Launches Inaugural Tafelmusik Winter Institute
January 7 to 12, 2013
Public concert on January 12 at 7:30 PM

Toronto, Canada, December 21, 2012 … Tafelmusik is thrilled to announce the first-ever Tafelmusik Winter Institute January 7 to 12, 2013. Building on ten years of success with the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, Tafelmusik is expanding its artist training offerings to include a week-long specialized institute for advanced students and professional players of baroque string and continuo instruments. 19 talented young artists hailing from across Canada and the United States, England, and Israel were selected by audition from a pool of 55 international applicants.
Tafelmusik’s Winter Institute provides an opportunity for in-depth study and training in aspects of specific repertoire — this year, the Italian concerto grosso — and includes orchestra rehearsals, sectionals, seminars, and masterclasses with faculty membersJeanne Lamon, Julia Wedman, Christina Mahler and Charlotte NedigerThe faculty members are committed to cultivating the individual excellence and collaborative spirit that the young musician requires and that the historically informed performance field demands. Tafelmusik Winter Institute will provide an encouraging and intimate environment to enable each musician to develop his or her own unique voice.
The week culminates with a public concert on Saturday January 12 at 7:30 PM at Trinity-St.Paul’s Centre, when participants in the orchestra play music by Corelli, Locatelli, Geminiani and Vivaldi alongside faculty members. Admission to the concert is general admission, pay-what-you-can (suggested contribution $20.00).
Tafelmusik’s Winter Institute is supported by the Silver Anniversary Fund established to mark the respective 25th anniversaries of Tafelmusik, and of Jeanne Lamon as Music Director. The Winter Institute is one of many advanced workshops planned for the future, each focusing on a different specific aspect of baroque music performance.
Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, led by Music Director Jeanne Lamon and founded in 1979, is one of the world’s leading period performance ensembles. The orchestra performs over 50 concerts a year at home in Toronto, tours extensively around the world, has released over 80 CDs and has received nine JUNO Awards and a Grammy Award nomination. Tafelmusik Media, the choir and orchestra’s multi-platform recording label, was launched in January 2012. Tafelmusik is the Baroque Orchestra-in-Residence at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto and operates its annual Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute.  The Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, under the direction of Ivars Taurins, was formed in 1981 to complement the Orchestra. The 2012/13 touring season brings Tafelmusik’s two most recent multi-media concerts, The Galileo Project and House of Dreams, to audiences across North America.
