TORONTO, ONTARIO – Jamaican born pianist Alan Hobbins is releasing his fourth album, this time turning to 
Beethoven for inspiration.  The recording, simply entitled “Alan Hobbins Plays Beethoven”, will be released at a
recital Mr. Hobbins is giving at the Richmond Hill Center for the Performing Arts on September 9 at 7 PM.

“I learned these sonatas at various points in my studies,” explains Alan, a friendly, articulate, easy-going personality.  
“The Pathetique is the first sonata I ever learned, so I have a history with it.  The Tempest is my favourite to perform, 
because of its fiery temperament, and duality to its personality – charged, yet calm.  I just love the last movement.”  
Of the Op. 90, Alan says, “this is the last sonata I learned, and I’m drawn to the lyricism of the work, and it’s not 
performed as much as the others.  And finally, the Moonlight is commonly played, but every performer has a unique 
association with it.  learned this to perform my St. Lawrence Centre debut in Toronto many years ago, so I have fond 
memories of studying this piece.”   The recording is self-produced under the Maestro Music label.   

The Concert program will feature three sonatas from the recording, the MoonlightTempest, and the Sonata in E minor, 
Op. 90; Chopin’s Ballade No. 4 and Polonaise in F sharp minor; Debussy’s Estampes and Liszt’s Transcendental 
Etude No. 8, Wilde Jagd.


Alan Hobbins has given many solo and chamber music concerts in Toronto and throughout Ontario. He has performed at the Glenn Gould Studio, the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, the National Library of Canada and the Toronto Centre for the Arts.  Alan has given recitals at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and several Canadian universities, as well as concert appearances in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York, and the Ward Theatre in his native Jamaica.  Alan’s recordings have been broadcast on CBC Radio and Classical FM 96.3. In addition to Alan’s solo endeavors, he is also a superb collaborative pianist.  He has worked with The Upper Canada Children’s Chorus and performed at the George Weston Recital Hall. Formerly on the faculty at The Royal Conservatory of Music, Alan is currently a member of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association and President of the Markham/Stouffville Branch.  In 2007, Alan joined the College of Examiners at The Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto.  A multiple award winner, including the The Harry Jerome Award for Outstanding Professional Excellence (awarded by the Black Business and Professional Association), Alan Hobbins is a graduate of The Juilliard School, and holds a Bachelor and Master of Music degree. Monday, July 23, 2012–  Cellist Jan Vogler has been presented with the exceptional opportunity to perform on the 1707-1710 Stradivarius 'Ex Castelbarco/Fau' cello.  On career loan through a private arrangement, Jan expressed his delight: “I feel very privileged to play on this magnificent Stradivari cello. After many wonderful years with my 1721 Montagnana, the Strad is a font of new inspiration and new sounds. To be able to choose between the two instruments according to the repertoire I am performing is beyond thrilling. This particular Stradivari cello was one of the first 'forma B' cellos made by the master between 1707 and 1710. It has a very strong and mature voice, incredible clarity, and an unlimited variety of colors.” His upcoming release for SONY of Bach’s Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello will be his first on the instrument.

Developed around 1707 by Stradivarius, only about twenty ‘forma B” cellos remain.  Smaller than its predecessor the innovative ‘forma B’ became the new standard in cello-making. “They stand alone in representing exact dimensions necessary for the production of a standard of tone which combines the maximum power with the utmost refinement of quality, leaving nothing to be desired: bright, full and crisp, yet free from any suspicion of either nasal or metallic tendency.” (Antonio Stradivari, His Life & Work by William Henry and Arthur F. Hill). The 'Duport'  played by M. Rostropovich, the 'Batta' played by Gregor Piatigorsky, and the 'Davidoff' which is currently being played be Yo-Yo Ma  are examples of ‘forma b’ cellos of this exceptional period in Stradivari’s workshop.

Jan Vogler’s distinguished career has featured him with renowned conductors Valery Gergiev, Lorin Maazel, Fabio Luisi, David Robertson andManfred Honeck and internationally acclaimed orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, Montreal and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Stuttgart Radio Orchestra andthe Vienna Symphony. A passionate recitalist and chamber musician, he performs regularly with pianists Hélène Grimaud and Martin Stadtfeld and with violinist Mira Wang.

Monday, July 23, 2012– One of Canada’s fastest rising opera stars, baritone Phillip Addis made a tremendous debut at the BBC Proms in what has become one of his trademark roles, Pelléas in Debussy’s beloved opera Pelléas et Mélisande.

Phillip was once again joined by soprano Karen Vourc’h as Mélisande in a reprisal of their much-praised partnership from the 2010 Opéra Comique de Paris production which marked Phillip’s debut in the role. Canada’s multi-platinum vocal group The Tenors, featuring Clifton Murray, Fraser Walters, Remigio Pereira and Victor Micallef, announced today the release of their highly anticipated second studio album, LEAD WITH YOUR HEART on October 9 through Universal Music Canada (UMC), the country’s leading music company.

LEAD WITH YOUR HEART is a 12-track album that stretches the boundaries of classical crossover by combining classic songs, modern tunes and Spanish and French world music. From cover features such as Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” to the inspirational anthem, “Amazing Grace” and one of the most recognizable and heroic Tenor arias, “Nessun Dorma”, the diverse track list features an eclectic mix of pop favourites and classical staples along with new compositions written and co-written by The Tenors.

COC's General Director Alexander Neef's Contract Extended to 2020-21

Toronto  Canadian Opera Company General Director Alexander Neef has signed a new contract with the COC that extends his tenure as General Director through the 2020/2021 season. 

“The relentless improvement in the artistry we are witnessing on the stage of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts is the best evidence of Alexander Neef’s unique ability to fit the right artists to the works that can best show their talents,” says Philip C. Deck, President of the Canadian Opera Company Board of Directors.  “He has harnessed all the assets that the COC has built over time – our fantastic opera house, our terrific orchestra, our fabulous chorus, great production teams and an audience that supports our innovations – and woven them into a package that attracts the finest artists in the world.  Our Canadian opera community demands the best and they have enthusiastically embraced the artistic vision that Alexander’s leadership has created.”

Since commencing his appointment as General Director in October 2008, Neef has overseen the presentation of one world premiere (The Nightingale and Other Short Fables, 2009), three Canadian premieres (Maria Stuarda, 2010; Love from Afar, 2012; A Florentine Tragedy, 2012) and six COC premieres (Rusalka, 2009; A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 2009; Nixon in China, 2011; Orfeo ed Euridice, 2011; Iphigenia in Tauris, 2011; Semele, 2012), as well as adding 10 new productions to the COC’s repertoire (Fidelio, 2009; A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 2009; The Nightingale and Other Short Fables, 2009; Otello, 2010; Idomeneo, 2010; Aida, 2010; The Magic Flute, 2011; Rigoletto, 2011; Love from Afar, 2012; A Florentine Tragedy/Gianni Schicchi, 2012).  He’s been instrumental in the COC debuts of numerous Canadian and international artists, and it was under his leadership that the company returned to the world-renowned Brooklyn Academy of Music for the first time since 1993 with its spectacular production of Robert Lepage’s The Nightingale and Other Short Fables in March 2011.

Neef’s many credits for the company also include increasing the public profile and professional development opportunities of the COC’s Ensemble Studio program, a training program for young opera professionals.  In 2010, an Ensemble Studio performance of a COC mainstage production was introduced as part of the annual season, with the program’s young singers cast in the title roles.  Although many Ensemble members perform smaller roles or are understudying roles in the COC’s productions, this special performance allows them greater opportunity to showcase their talents as well as gain valuable practical experience by working under the direction of the same creative team as the mainstage cast and performing with the full COC Orchestra and Chorus.  In 2011, the Ensemble Studio Competition was launched, inviting the public to be part of the singers’ professional journeys by opening the final round of auditions to an audience for the first time.

Alexander Neef’s new contract extends his tenure with the Canadian Opera Company through to the end of September 2021.  The COC’s upcoming 2012/2013 season will mark Neef’s fifth as General Director.

Opera Lyra Ottawa Appoints New General Director

Opera Lyra Ottawa has chosen a new General Director. John Peter -“Jeep”- Jefferies will be responsible for providing overall direction for the company and for identifying and securing resources needed for its operations.  Mr. Jefferies will attend the company’s annual Italian Garden Party on July 10th and be in place for Opera Lyra Ottawa’s production of La Bohème by Puccini at the NAC in September 2012.
 John Peter Jeffries was chosen after an extensive, international search”, says Board Chairman Malcolm McCulloch. “Mr. Jeffries has over thirty years experience in the opera business and is eminently qualified for the position. He has managed three American opera companies of similar size to Opera Lyra and before that, worked for the Canadian Opera Company as Director of Production Operations. The Opera Lyra Board is extremely pleased to welcome Mr. Jeffries to our organization.”
 J.P. Jefferies is known as Jeep and is also known for his success in turning around regional opera companies in financial difficulties.  He brings his extensive experience and leadership skills to revive and revitalize Opera Lyra Ottawa, now in its 28th year.  In November 2011, Opera Lyra Ottawa cancelled the remainder of the 2011-2012 season after a series of financial setbacks in order to reorganize its operations.
 Mr. Jefferies says he considers the chance to play a principal role in the renaissance of Opera Lyra Ottawa to be a golden opportunity.  “I am eager to collaborate with the board and staff to complete the formulation of a new vision for the future, to lead the company into a new era of financial stability, and to build upon its already considerable artistic legacy.”
Most recently, Mr. Jefferies served as Executive Director of Tulsa Opera from 2008 to 2011. He was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company business operations, including marketing, fundraising and finance.  From 2001 to 2008 he served as Executive Director of Opera Grand Rapids in Grand Rapids, Michigan. There he helped retire the company’s accumulated deficit and led the drive to construct a new permanent home for the company. Before moving to Grand Rapids he was Managing Director of Opera Idaho, located in Boise. Prior to working in Idaho, he served as Director of Production for the Portland Opera in Portland, Oregon (1996-2000) where he managed all technical aspects of putting the company’s five-opera season on stage. Before that he held a similar position with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto (1989-1996).

Opera Lyra Ottawa’s 28th Season:
Opera Lyra Ottawa launches its 28th season with Puccini’s La Bohème at the National Arts Centre on September 8, 10, 12, 15, 2012.  Four shows only, conducted by Alexander Shelley.  Joyce El-Khoury returns to Ottawa to take the starring role of Mimi.  She is a graduate of the Opera Lyra Studio and the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development program. On March 21 and 23, Opera Lyra Ottawa presents Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata in honour of the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth.  Conducted by Tyron Paterson, it will be performed in concert at the National Arts Centre.
Cinderella by Rossini. This favourite fairy tale has been adapted into a one-hour version for family and school audiences and is performed by the young artists of the Opera Lyra Studio in the Arts Court Theatre from November 3-9, 2012.

Italian Garden Party:
The annual Italian Garden Party is hosted by the Italian Ambassador of Italy to Canada, Andrea Meloni and Mrs. Paola Meloni at their residence.  It is an evening in support of Opera Lyra Ottawa featuring arias, wine, food and a fashion show presented by Earlene’s House of Fashion.

Founded in 1972, The Toronto Consort was one of the city’s first professional period music ensembles specializing in the music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and early Baroque — roughly 1200 to 1675. The ensemble’s founding members David Klausner, Timothy McGee, Frank Nakashima, David Walker, and the late Garry Crighton introduced Toronto audiences to music by little-known composers and to the exotic sounds of period instruments that were rarely heard in concert halls: sackbut, recorder, krummhorn, shawm, oud, vielle and rebec, among others.   

Over the past four decades, the Toronto Consort has continued to expand listeners’ appreciation through inventive programming that breathes life into period music. The ensemble has become internationally recognized for its excellence in live and recorded period music, and has collaborated on a number of film and television projects including Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter and two Showtime series, The Tudors andThe Borgias. The Consort’s current members are David Fallis, who joined the group in 1979 and became its Artistic Director in 1990, Michele DeBoer, Ben Grossman, Katherine Hill, Paul Jenkins, Terry McKenna, Alison Melville, John Pepper, and Laura Pudwell.  

The Toronto Consort’s 40th anniversary gift to the city: Janet Cardiff’s sound installation FORTY-PART MOTET comes to Scotiabank Nuit Blanche on September 29

Just ahead of the 40th anniversary season launch, the Toronto Consort is delighted to bring Janet Cardiff's award-winning sound installationFORTY-PART MOTET to Toronto’s Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre, to be part of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche on September 29, 2012. FORTY-PART MOTET is based on a masterwork of English Renaissance choral music, Spem in alium written by Thomas Tallis for forty separate voices. Cardiff’s work has travelled the world, and has been seen at MoMA in New York, Tate Liverpool in England, and the National Gallery in Ottawa. The installation consists of forty speakers arranged in a large room, each speaker representing one of the voices in Tallis’ motet. Just three weeks after Nuit Blanche, Consort audiences will have the opportunity to hear this piece performed live at the 40th anniversary opening concerts on October 19 and 20.
 FORTY-PART MOTET is brought to Toronto with the generous support of the Metcalf Foundation.

The Tudors
October 19 & 20, 2012

The Consort launches its 40th anniversary season with a concert program inspired by the music of Tudor England, culminating in Thomas Tallis’ rarely-heard, magnificent 40-part motet Spem in alium. Members of Toronto’s Tallis Choir join the Consort for this special performance. Ever since 2007, the Toronto Consort has become the go-to ensemble providing “source music” for the hit television series The Tudors, and subsequently, The Borgias. As Historical Music Producer for The Tudors, Fallis was in charge of researching, compiling and recording authentic period music for the 10-part series starring Jonathan Rhys MeyersSam Neill and Peter O’Toole. This opening program of the season includes music that the Consort recorded for The Tudors.

Praetorius Mass for Christmas Morning
December 14, 15 & 16, 2012

This sonorous and spectacular concert recreates the music which might have been heard at a Christmas Morning Lutheran Mass under Michael Praetorius. Like the Consort’s Praetorius Christmas Vespers —an audience favourite— this new program features early brass, strings, lutes, keyboards and voices positioned around the balconies at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre.

The Loves of Apollo and Daphne

Francesco Cavalli is the brilliant composer whose operatic masterpieces were the 17th-century equivalents of Rossini and Verdi: wildly popular, by turns heart-wrenching and hilarious. The Toronto Consort proudly presents the Canadian premiere of this ironic and erotic tale of Apollo’s unrequited love for the nymph Daphne, with some secondary tales of infidelity and misadventure. Sung in Italian, The Loves of Apollo and Daphnefeatures English tenor Charles Daniels and soprano Katherine Hill in the title roles, mezzo-soprano Laura Pudwell as Venus and sopranoMichele DeBoer as Aurora.

The Toronto Consort is thrilled to present one of the greatest early music singers of all time, Dame Emma Kirkby, in recital with renowned lutenist Jakob Lindberg. Their program “Orpheus in England” commemorates the 450th anniversary of the birth of composer John Dowland. Paired with selections by Henry Purcell, this concert of music by quintessentially English composers is a perfect complement to the Consort’s celebratory season. 

A Woman’s Life

From Alison Mackay, former member of the Toronto Consort and creator of Tafelmusik’s The Galileo Project and House of Dreams, comes another stunning evening of music, words and projected imagery. A Woman’s Life was originally presented in 1997 and explores the lives and talents of women composers and singers from the Middle Ages, Renaissance and early Baroque, featuring music by Hildegard of Bingen, Barbara Strozzi and Francesca Caccini. Toronto actors Maggie Huculak and Karen Woolridge will join the Consort for this program, which includes scripted sections to enhance the audience’s enjoyment.

Firday and Saturday evening concerts begin at 8:00 pm and Sunday matinee concerts begin at 3:30 pm. All concerts take place at Trinity St. Paul's Centre, 427 Bloor Street West
