The Toronto Consort presents the Canadian premiere of
Francesco Cavalli’s 1640 Italian opera
The Loves of Apollo & Daphne February 15 & 16, 2013
Toronto, January 17, 2013 … The Toronto Consort is thrilled to present the Canadian premiere of The Loves of Apollo & Daphne, an opera (performed in-concert) by the 17th-century Italian composer Francesco Cavalli, at 8:00 PM on February 15 and 16 at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre. The renowned English tenor and frequent Consort guest Charles Daniels returns to sing the role of Apollo, and the Consort’s own Katherine Hill and Michele DeBoer, sopranos, andLaura Pudwell, mezzo-soprano, will sing the roles of Daphne, Aurora and Venus, respectively. For tickets, call the box office at (416) 964-6337 or visit www.torontoconsort.org.
Francesco Cavalli is the brilliant Italian composer whose operatic masterpieces were the 17th-century equivalents of Rossini and Verdi. His second opera, The Loves of Apollo & Daphne, is an ironic and erotic tale about Apollo’s unrequited love for the nymph Daphne. Premiered in Venice in 1640, the opera would have featured a rich palette of instruments including strings, recorders, theorbo, baroque harp, organ, harpsichord and viola da gamba.
With only a facsimile of the original hand-written score held in Venice’s Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana to work from, the Consort’s Artistic Director David Fallis and Tafelmusik’s Charlotte Nediger have taken on the arduous task of creating a proper performance edition of the score. Thanks to their efforts, Toronto Consort audiences will be among the first in Canada to hear a live performance of this operatic gem from the 17th-century.
One of Canada’s leading interpreters of operatic and choral/orchestral repertoire, especially from the Baroque and Classical periods, Fallis is no stranger to the task of dusting off and reviving old scores. Since his appointment as Artistic Director in 1990, Fallis has introduced Toronto music lovers to the operas of Monteverdi, Rossi and Cavalli. In his role as Music Director for Opera Atelier, Fallis has conducted many performances of operas by Mozart, Handel, Monteverdi, Rameau, and Gluck, and has helped bring that company onto stages around the world — to South Korea and Japan, as well as Glimmerglass and the Royal Opera at Versailles.
