Pacific Opera Victoria Artistic Director receives honorary degree


June 24, 2013 -Timothy Vernon, Artistic Director of Pacific Opera Victoria (POV), was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the June 19, 2013 convocation ceremony at Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC. The honour is in recognition of Mr. Vernon's strong leadership and contributions to Canada's cultural scene, demonstrating a standard of excellence that is an inspiration to graduates.

As a result of Vernon's vision and commitment to emerging Canadian artists, POV has offered first professional engagements for emerging singers and showcased some of Canada's finest opera singers. Many accomplished directors, designers and production artists have made their main stage Canadian opera debuts with POV.

In 2008, Mr. Vernon was presented with the Order of Canada, in recognition of his work in expanding professional opera in Canada and his commitment to young musicians. Vernon is also a recipient of Opera Canada's 2005 Ruby Award as Opera Builder and a 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
Under his leadership, POV commissioned and presented the world première of Mary's Wedding. Mr. Vernon conducted the Canadian premières of Richard Strauss' Daphne and Capriccio, using his own reductions of Strauss' orchestrations.

As founding Artistic Director, Mr. Vernon has led most of Pacific Opera Victoria's productions since the company's inception in 1979. He continues to bring to Pacific Opera Victoria a unique vision that has engaged the community and made POV a nationally recognized symbol of artistic excellence. Maestro Vernon will lead the company in October 2013 in its 100th production, Verdi's Falstaff, followed by Strauss' Ariadne Auf Naxos and Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.
