CANADIAN MUSICIANS HEARD LIVE FROM ROME ON INTERNET
Canadian music will be heard around the world, when a concert from Canadian Day in Rome will stream live on the internet. The broadcast will begin Friday, July 5 at 1:30 p.m. EDT (7:30 in Rome; 10:30 a.m. Pacific) viawww.radiocemat.org.
The performance airs live from the Sala Casella in the elegant building and grounds of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana in Central Rome. Canadian Day closes the week-long celebration Le Nazioni, The Festival of Nations, hosted by the AFR.
The concert features classical musicians from across Canada in their European, Italian or Rome debuts: Vancouver’s Borealis String Quartet, Edmonton based violinist Guillaume Tardif (originally from Quebec), Toronto based clarinetist Kornel Wolak, and Montreal soprano Jana Miller (originally of Nova Scotia) and pianist Jordan de Souza.
The performance includes Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock (soprano, clarinet, piano) and a virtuosic arrangement of his Erlkönig for solo violin. Canadian works receiving their European or Rome premieres are Aria(1946) by Jean Papineau-Couture; String Quartet No. 1 (2004) by Imant Raminsh; and Ashes of Soldiers (2010) byColin Eatock, with a text based on Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass.
Canada this year became the first North American nation invited to Le Nazioni. The Festival also features the cultures of four other countries this week: with Norway on July 1; Morocco, July 2; Brazil, July 3; Iran, July 4; and Canada, July 5.
