Stratford Summer Music 2013 Celebrates Composer R Murray Schafer's 80th Birthday

STRATFORD, Ont. – The 13th season of Stratford Summer Music opens with a series of special events commemorating the 80th Birthday of internationally renowned Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, from July 18 – 21, 2013.

On Thursday, July 18, Schafer’s 80th birthday, friends and colleagues of the composer will gather at The Church Restaurant, 70 Brunswick Street, for a special performance, hosted by Eleanor James, and a tribute dinner. Beginning at 6:15 p.m., portions of Schafer’s PATRIA cycle and other signature works will be performed, including: Judy Loman’s harp and percussion performance of The Crown of Ariadne, La Testa d’Adrianeby soprano Brooke Dufton and accordionist Joseph Macerollo; and the Aria of Amente-Nufe from RA, performed by mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó with percussionist Daniel Morphy of the TorQ Ensemble. The Annex String Quartet will present String Quartet #5, The Rosalind and soprano Patricia Green will perform, a cappella, Sun Father: Earth Mother, from And Wolf Shall Inherit the Moon, the conclusion to PATRIA. From The Greatest Show, Jesse Stewart and clarinetist Rebecca Dannard will perform Wizard Oil & Indian Sagwa.    
During the Tribute Dinner, Schafer will be saluted by former CBC Radio Music producer David Jaeger; soprano and teacher Mary Morrison, and Toronto Star columnist William Littler. A special international presentation will be made to the composer by Professor Sabine Breitsameter from Germany’s Hochschule Darmstad (The Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences) and Eric Leonardson, President of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology.   

From Friday, July 19 – Sunday, July 21, Schafer’s Music for Wilderness Lake will be performed, beginning at 7:00 a.m., along and around the waters of Tom Patterson Island. This musical presentation includes 12 trombonists, directed by Cam Walter, and an aria sung by Brooke Dufton from a canoe in the Avon River. Prior to the performances the audience will enjoy complimentary coffee and donuts from Tim Horton’s.
At 11:00 a.m., following the Friday morning presentation of Music for Wilderness Lake, an exhibition of Schafer’s hand-drawn scores, from his publication company ARCANA Editions, will officially open at the Stratford Public Library, 19 St. Andrew Street. This special event includes a musical performance by Rae Crossman and Tilly Kooyman of Schafer`s From the Bow (clarinet and spoken word).    
Schafer Scores! will be available for viewing, handling and exploring during the Library’s summer hours: Monday`s from 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Schafer Scores! will be open until the end of Stratford Summer Music’s 13th season on August 25th.
