Martin Faucher appointed head of Festival TransAmériques
“People might say that Martin Faucher was the obvious choice, and they would be right! His intimate knowledge of the Festival and its operations, his regular attendance at international events and his network of contacts make him the ideal candidate to replace Marie-Hélène Falcon. In listening to him making plans for the future of the Festival TransAmériques, we are convinced that the Festival will continue to grow and develop in the same spirit that has led to its resounding success. In both dance and theatre, he is always on the lookout for new talents and new forms of artistic expression, while supporting research by performing artists. With the soul and spirit of an artist, in our opinion Martin Faucher will increase the growth and influence of the FTA.”
Paule Leduc, Chair, FTA Board of Directors
“Over the past eight years, I have had the great privilege of getting to know the Festival TransAmériques from within, to meet on its behalf with exceptional artists from here and abroad. I intend to continue to offer the adventurous FTA audiences the most innovative and impressive works in the contemporary performing arts. I want to pursue the remarkable work undertaken by Marie-Hélène Falcon since the very beginnings of the Festival de théâtre des Amériques, which later became the Festival TransAmériques. I humbly hope to live up to the tremendous legacy she has left to Quebec society, and want to thank her from the bottom of my heart for her exceptional contribution to promoting contemporary theatre and dance on the national and international scenes.”
An artistic consultant with the FTA since 2006, Martin Faucher has been actively contributing to the cultural life of Quebec for the past three decades as an actor, director, teacher and administrator in the performing arts milieu. As president of Daniel Léveillé Danse since 1994, he supervised the development of the company and raised its profile, and in the process boosted the careers of several young choreographers. As president of the Conseil québécois du théâtre from 2005 to 2009, he organized the Quebec professional theatre conference in 2007. The Gratien Gélinas Foundation, the Centre des auteurs dramatiques and the Théâtre Bouches Décousues have also benefited from his hard work and commitment. A sought-after pedagogue, Martin Faucher regularly teaches at the National Theatre School of Canada, and is renowned for his sensitive and inventive staging of contemporary texts. From À quelle heure on meurt ? in 1988 to Yukonstyle(presented at Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui last spring) and the recent Villa Dolorosa at Théâtre Espace Go, he has directed some thirty stage productions over the years and is the recipient of several awards.
Martin Faucher will officially take up his duties as artistic director on June 17, 2014 and will share the general direction of the Festival with David Lavoie, currently the assistant general director, who will become co-general director and administrative director of the Festival TransAmériques.
The board of directors wishes to thank the many highly qualified individuals from Canada and other countries who applied for this position. Many thanks as well to the members of the selection committee (Anne-Marie Cadieux, Gil Desautels, Marie Lavigne and Jacynthe St-Pierre) and committee chair Paule Leduc, for their work in reviewing and selecting candidates, in conjunction with the firm Kenniff & Racine.
