Canada’s Ballet Jörgen performs with Symphony Nova Scotia in Romeo and Juliet

Halifax, NS – Canada’s Ballet Jörgen is bringing its full-length production of Romeo and Juliet to Halifax as part of its 20-city cross-Canada tour on April 16 and 17 at the Dalhousie Arts Centre’s Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. Evening performances are at 8:00 pm, in addition to a special schools-only matinee performance on Thursday, April 17 at 10:30 am.

All three performances will be accompanied by Symphony Nova Scotia’s full orchestra, performing Prokofiev’s bombastic score live in the pit beneath the stage.
“We are thrilled to have renewed our partnership with Symphony Nova Scotia and our dancers are excited about the opportunity to perform with the musicians under the artistic leadership of Maestro Bernhard Gueller,” says Bengt Jörgen, Artistic Director of Canada’s Ballet Jörgen. “This is a unique opportunity for Nova Scotians to experience the excitement and drama of live classical ballet with all of the orchestral colour.”

Shakespeare’s tale of love, anguish and revenge is masterfully transformed into Bengt Jörgen’s magical world of ballet. With music by Sergei Prokofiev, costume design by Annapolis Royal’s Gary Dahms, and set and lighting design by Glenn Davidson, the production has been described as “a jewel-box Romeo & Juliet” by the Globe and Mail’s Paula Citron.

Also unique to the production is the incorporation of student dancers and theatre students from the local community. Based on recommendations by their dance/theatre teachers or at an audition, local participants will perform as village children and teenagers, ballroom guests, and guards. Students can register online to participate, and you can find out more on the company’s website here. The company will also be running its annual auditions for Canada’s Ballet Jörgen Company, Junior Company, Summer Programs, and George Brown dance programs on April 13 (location and time TBA).
Tickets are now on sale at the Dalhousie Arts Centre Box Office.  You can purchase online (www.artscentre.dal.ca), in person or by calling 902.494.3820. There are discounts for students and seniors and groups of ten or more.
School administrators should call 494.6406 to reserve for the matinee performance; tickets are $10 each.
Artistic Director Bengt Jörgen will give a pre-performance chat at 6:45 pm both evenings; this chat is free for everyone attending the performance.

The Halifax performances are made possible by Canada’s Ballet Jörgen Season Sponsor RBC Wealth Management. Additional support for Romeo and Juliet is made possible by National Presenting Partner BMO Financial Group, the Margaret and David Foundation, the Coast, the Chronicle Herald, Westin Nova Scotia, and KOOL 96.5 FM Radio.
