Shean Piano Competition: pianist from Weyburn, Saskatchewan takes $8,000 top prize

Edmonton, AB – On Saturday, May 17, 2014 – after two days of amazing and very high calibre competition – pianist Meagan Milatz (20 years old), originally from Weyburn, Saskatchewan and currently studying at McGill, was awarded the $8,000 top prize in The Shean Piano Competition.  She has also won the opportunity to play with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at a future date.  Ms. Milatz was one of 6 finalists chosen from the 36 submitted entries to compete in The 2014 Shean Piano Competition on May 16 and 17 in Edmonton, AB.

The complete results of the Competition are as follows:

Ø  First Place and $8,000 – Meagan Milatz (Weyburn, SK)
Ø  Second Place and $5,000 – Haewon Yang (Ottawa, ON)
Ø  Third Place and $4,000 – John Chan (Edmonton, AB)
Ø  Fourth Place and $3,000 – Matthew Ming Li (Vancouver, BC)
Ø  Fifth Place and $2,000 – Cissy Zhou (Toronto, ON)

Unfortunately, Justine Pelletier (Montréal, QC) had to withdraw after Day 1 of the Competition.

Meagan Milatz also won the $1,000 Paul J. Bourret Memorial Award for Best Performance of the Test Piece – “Alborada del gracioso” from Miroirs by Maurice Ravel.

The adjudicators for this year’s Competition were David Hoyt, Chair; Alvin Chow, and Ilja Scheps.

The 2015 Shean Strings Competition takes place May 15 and 16, 2015 in Edmonton with an $8,000 Top Prize and the opportunity to perform with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.  The $1,000 Paul J. Bourret Memorial Award for Best Performance of the Test Piece will also be awarded.
