2014 Accordion Noir Festival: September 11-14

Vancouver, BC. – The seventh edition of The Accordion Noir Festival marks the beginning of an exciting new phase for one of the city’s most eclectic and boundary-pushing music festivals. A stellar lineup of international and national accordion artists features Socalled (Montreal), Miss Murgatroid (Portland), Lonesome Leash (New Orleans/Los Angeles) and Ol’ Crocodile (France/Montreal ) alongside Vancouver heavies including Geoff Berner and Wintermitts.

New audiences will have a chance to catch the grassroots spirit that has made the festival an underground East Vancouver favorite, with evening concerts and daytime community events running at The Russian Hall, The Orpheum Annex and The Fox Cabaret.
International accordion iconoclast Socalled kickstarts the festival, headlining Squeezebox Confession Thursday, September 11 at the Fox Cabaret. Mashing together turbo-folk, hip-hop and klezmer funk, Socalled’s appearance will draw on past works and showcase materials from his latest album, The Season, “a puppet-heavy indie musical fable for the 21st century.”
Festival closer Miss Murgatroid is a pioneer of avant-experimental accordion who rose to prominence in PORTLAND in the late 1980s. Her performance in Free Reed Association marks the end of a ten-year musical hiatus and is supported through an exciting new co-production relationship with The Vancouver New Music Society.
Jack Garton (Maria in the Shower) hosts the Accordion Speakeasy, a celebration of the underground aspects of accordion culture, featuring homegrown klezmer great Geoff Berner alongside the festival debut of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Walt McClements, a.k.a. Lonesome Leash.
Saturday night begins with The Accordion Kitchen Party, a culturally diverse community celebration featuring the “reel meets raga” fusion of Nova Scotian songwriter Robyn Carrigan (Nova Scotia/Vancouver). Quebec’s Ol’ Crocodile brings their infamous “Folk Sale” (dirty) folk to the DANCE PARTY alongside Vancouver’s own genre-bending, bilingual six-piece, Wintermitts. The evening also marks the final festival performance of fan favourites The Creaking Planks, led by Accordion Noir Festival co-founder Rowan Lipkovitz. Vancouver’s most curiously wonderful burlesque, clown, magic and mime performers, drawn from the Dusty Flowerpot, Poupon Parade and Vancouver Fringe Festival Pick of the Fringe, appear throughout the festival as curated by Jack Garton in Dr. Jack's Jackpot of Cabaret Curios.
