Inspired By Venice: A Baroque Concert with The Musicians in Ordinary


THE MUSICIANS IN ORDINARY PERFORM A BAROQUE CONCERT
INSPIRED BY VENICE – DECEMBER 8 AT ST. MICHAEL’S COLLEGE

The University of St. Michael’s College invites music lovers to an Advent concert of baroque music Inspired by Venice, Monday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m., at St. Basil’s Church, 50 St. Joseph Street in downtown Toronto.

The concert features The Musicians In Ordinary led by baroque violinist Christopher Verrette, with soprano Hallie Fishel and the choir and soloists of St. Michael’s Schola Cantorum directed by Michael O’Connor.

Among other works, the program includes music by two of the great Venetian Baroque composers – the founder of modern opera, Claudio Monteverdi (Beatus Vir andConfitebor Tibi all Francese), and his deputy at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Alessandro Grandi(Ave Maris Stella); along with works by two German composers, Franz Tunder (Dominus Illuminatio mea) and Heinrich Schütz (Singet dem Herrn). Instrumental selections include canzonas by Giovanni Gabrieli and Johann Hermann Schein.

Hallie Fishel sings the solo Virgo Prudentissima by Grandi in the “new concertato style” with violins; and the solo Paratum cor meum by Schutz in the “new style” imitating Grandi and his contemporaries. Christopher Verrette also leads a “violin band”, comprising two violins, two violas and a bass violin.

Ensemble-in-residence at St. Michael’s College, The Musicians In Ordinaryfeatures soprano Hallie Fishel, baroque violinist Christopher Verrette, lutenist John Edwards and others in a series of concerts throughout the season.
